Family seeks FEMA aid after historic Helene flooding
SUMMARY: Following the historic flooding in Green County, a family is applying for federal aid. Reporter Lauren Davis spoke with Patty Cal and her daughter Trish Coker about their experiences. Patty’s three-story home was severely impacted, requiring significant cleanup. They sought help at FEMA disaster recovery centers that opened in Green and Hamlin counties. While Patty found assistance in submitting forms, Trish faced initial denial due to their shared address. They were advised to appeal by providing proof of her rental situation. Both women encourage others to apply for aid, emphasizing the importance of persistence in the application process. The application deadline is December 2nd.

Newport businesses struggling after Helene
SUMMARY: After Hurricane Helene, Newport businesses are still struggling to recover. Many had to close for weeks due to flooding, with 2 to 3 feet of water damaging their stores. Though they have reopened, customer traffic is down by 20-40%, as rerouted roads discourage visits. Business owners express gratitude for community support but emphasize the need for more customers, especially through the holiday season. They urge locals to continue supporting small businesses to ensure the town’s survival. With limited access to I-40 and fewer visitors, these businesses face a challenging winter ahead.
With fewer North Carolina customers, they are relying on East Tennesseans to help them through the holiday season.
