Family of JSU student killed on campus files wrongful death lawsuit

SUMMARY: The of a (JSU) student, who was killed on campus in 2022, has filed a wrongful against the university. Flynn Brown, 22, was found dead inside a vehicle on JSU's campus on Friday, December 2, 2022. Randall Smith, 20, of New Orleans, was taken into custody and charged with murder. The lawsuit alleges that the university failed to initiate an investigation into Smith despite reports of from Brown and his suitemates. Smith claimed he killed Brown in self-defense, stating that Brown had taken his food and choked him. Smith was given a $200,000 bond and 270 days of GPS monitoring.

PHOTOS: Man wanted for kidnapping 7-month-old in Jackson

Fire damages home on Turtle Lane in Rankin County

MHP responds to 4 fatal crashes during 2024 Independence Day Enforcement Period

SUMMARY: During the 2024 Travel Period (July 4-7), the (MHP) responded to four fatal crashes in Pearl , Scott, Sunflower, and Pike Counties, resulting in four deaths. MHP issued a total of 6,474 citations, cited 876 drivers for occupant restraint violations, and made 149 arrests for impaired driving. Additionally, they investigated 141 crashes resulting in 45 injuries. This year's enforcement activity showed an increase in citations, DUIs, seatbelt and child restraint citations, and crashes to the 2023 two-day travel period.
