Fairhope City Council squashes immigrant rumors
SUMMARY: In Alabama, hysteria over immigrants, particularly Haitian communities in North Alabama, has intensified. Rumors about immigrants arriving in Fair Hope sparked heated discussions among residents, despite city officials trying to quell concerns. Many locals voiced fears that an influx of immigrants without proper planning could disrupt the school system and lead to lawlessness. Controversy arose over a letter signed by council member Cory Martin in support of refugee resettlement during the Ukraine crisis, which resurfaced now, fueling anxiety. Local leaders clarified they lack the power to control immigration policies, emphasizing they can only address challenges at the local level.
Hysteria over an influx of refugees or illegal immigrants coming into Fairhope was squashed by city council members and the mayor Monday night.
