SUMMARY: David Livingston, executive director of the Mississippi Loggers Association, highlighted the rarity of logging accidents in Mississippi, noting the unusual occurrence of two recent accidents in the same area. Despite extensive safety training, he emphasized that logging remains a dangerous job, where situations can rapidly become life-threatening. Companies hold annual or bi-annual safety meetings, and individual contractors must document monthly safety meetings to comply with OER regulations. Mississippi loggers use mechanized systems to handle more dangerous tasks, but despite these precautions, tragic accidents still happen, underscoring the importance of prioritizing safety continuously.

Mississippi making strides in opioid crisis
SUMMARY: Mississippi has made significant strides in addressing the opioid crisis, with opioid deaths declining for two consecutive years. The state’s efforts include stricter prescribing regulations and enhanced access to treatment for opioid use disorder. The opioid epidemic worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, with isolation and limited treatment access exacerbating the issue. The introduction of fentanyl further complicated the crisis, leading to many deaths from counterfeit pills. Mississippi has focused on education and distributing Narcan kits to reverse overdoses. The Department of Health also provides free treatment options through its program for those without insurance or local providers.
