Enviva files bankruptcy after getting millions in South Mississippi tax incentives

SUMMARY: Enviva will be the largest producer of solid propellant in the nation. Construction of the plant in Stone County is now on hold as the company has filed for bankruptcy with $2.6 billion in debt. The company received millions in state and local incentives but is restructuring to dig out of its financial hole. Despite the bankruptcy, the company made a $1 million tax payment and created about 100 indirect jobs. The plant in Lucedale continues to produce wood fuel pellets, while other operations in the area are unaffected. Local officials are monitoring developments and their impact on the community. 130 trucks a day deliver wood pellets to the Mississippi Export Railroad, which then goes to the Port of Pascagoula. These operations are not impacted by the bankruptcy.

In financial filings, the company says it’s $2.6 billion in debt. Now, the company is asking for protection from creditors and restructures.
