Embattled Columbus city councilman arrested yet again
SUMMARY: Columbus City Councilman Pierre Beard was arrested following a special city council meeting due to an outstanding warrant for unpaid court fines. Beard has a history of legal troubles, including two arrests in December 2023 for DUI and drug possession in Alabama, as well as another arrest related to an armed robbery at a Waffle House. He also faced domestic violence charges in November 2021, which were dismissed when the victim didn’t appear in court. Beard has been a council member since 2019 and is scheduled to serve until 2025.

Charter schools in Mississippi are working: Let’s give more families the opportunity
SUMMARY: As a member of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Mississippi Charter Schools Association, I’ve observed the challenges faced by Mississippi students and the transformative role of charter schools. With only 10 charter schools currently in operation, the data shows significant improvements in student outcomes, especially in reading, math, and science proficiency. Expanding charter schools can provide more personalized learning opportunities and foster healthy competition within the education system. To better serve families and address educational disparities, I urge the Mississippi Legislature to pass House Bill 1432, enabling charter schools to expand and improve access to quality education statewide.
