The District Attorney’s office is bringing justice more quickly, with murder trials now averaging once a week, compared to one or two per month before the pandemic. Over 60 murder cases have been resolved this year, and the county is on track to see 15-20% fewer homicides compared to last year. Homicide rates are also decreasing in Durham County. Despite challenges from COVID-related delays, justice is being served more efficiently.
After a rise in deadly crime during the COVID-19 pandemic, homicides appear to be falling around the two counties.

Stagville Plantation descendants have historic homecoming in NC
SUMMARY: At Stagville Plantation in Durham, descendants of enslaved ancestors gathered for a poignant homecoming 180 years after their relatives were forced to walk to a new plantation in Alabama. Families commemorated the brutal 500-mile journey made by 114 enslaved individuals under Paul Cameron. This gathering inspired pride and a desire to uncover more about their family’s past amidst a legacy of hardship and strength.
The historic journey, now known by the family as “The Trek,”‘ began in 1844 when enslaver Paul Cameron ordered 114 enslaved people to walk from Stagville to western Alabama.
