Election 2024: Four races pivotal to Republican power in House | North Carolina
SUMMARY: Four key races in the North Carolina House of Representatives are pivotal for determining Republican power, especially involving incumbent Rep. Tricia Cotham, following her party switch to the GOP. Early voting starts soon, with Election Day approaching, amid expectations of Governor Democrats retaining power, making legislative dynamics crucial for Republicans. Cotham faces Democrat Nicole Sidman in District 105, while other notable Democrat incumbents like Terence Everitt and Diamond Staton-Williams contend with Republican challengers. Analysts believe select districts may flip, though the overall potential for significant GOP gains appears limited, given historical voting patterns and past elections.

Wake County, Durham County murder rates declining
SUMMARY: The Wake County murder rate had been steadily rising, with 52 homicides in 2022 and 56 in 2023, but it is now trending downward in 2024. The District Attorney’s office is bringing justice more quickly, with murder trials now averaging once a week, compared to one or two per month before the pandemic. Over 60 murder cases have been resolved this year, and the county is on track to see 15-20% fewer homicides compared to last year. Homicide rates are also decreasing in Durham County. Stagville Plantation descendants have historic homecoming in NC
SUMMARY: At Stagville Plantation in Durham, descendants of enslaved ancestors gathered for a poignant homecoming 180 years after their relatives were forced to walk to a new plantation in Alabama. Families commemorated the brutal 500-mile journey made by 114 enslaved individuals under Paul Cameron. Emotional reflections highlighted the resilience of their ancestors, honored through their shared history.
