Election 2024: Competition thin for changes in state Senate | North Carolina
SUMMARY: North Carolina’s Senate races on November 5 are poised for significant political shifts. Key battles include Democratic Rep. Terence Everitt challenging for the open District 18 seat, previously held by Sen. Mary Wills Bode. Republicans aim for majorities to counter a likely Democratic governor, with GOP and Democratic analysts suggesting few competitive seats exist. Early voting begins soon, with notable races including Sen. Michael Lee facing David Hill in District 7 and Sen. Lisa Barnes challenged by James Mercer in District 11. Additional attention is on District 42, where Rachel Hunt seeks the lieutenant governorship, and other pivotal dual-party contests.

Hurricane Milton Category 5 Current Path and Impact
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton has rapidly intensified into a category 5 storm with winds at 160 mph, setting records as the strongest October storm in the Gulf. It is expected to remain a category 5 until Tuesday before weakening to a category 4 and making landfall in Florida late Wednesday or early Thursday, likely around Tampa. While Florida braces for significant impacts, North Carolina will experience minimal effects due to a cold front that has moved through the area, leading to cooler temperatures and only breezy conditions with gusts up to 30 mph later in the week.
The latest path from the National Hurricane Center shows that we will be hundreds of miles north and west of the storm Thursday, and it is a smaller storm than Helene was.

Milton explodes into Cat. 5 hurricane, expected to slightly weaken ahead of landfall in Florida
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton is rapidly intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico and heading towards Florida’s Gulf Coast, prompting emergency orders in 51 counties. Just 11 days after Hurricane Helen devastated the same area, residents are frantically filling sandbags to prepare for potential flooding. Forecasters warn of record storm surges between 8 to 12 feet, surpassing Helen’s surge of 6 to 8 feet. Governor Ron DeSantis has ordered landfill sites to remain open 24/7. FEMA is already on the ground responding to Helen’s impact and preparing for Milton, while President Biden has dispatched 500 active-duty troops to North Carolina for recovery efforts.
Hurricane Milton has exploded into a Category 5 storm within just hours, with max winds of 160 mph.
