El Niño in Mississippi: Here’s what to expect
SUMMARY: The 2023-2024 El Niño is predicted to be historically strong, with a 54% chance of being among the five strongest since 1950. However, a super-strong El Niño does not necessarily mean super-strong impacts, and the effects will depend on geographic location. The precipitation outlook for December, January, and February indicates more rain for the southern half of the country and drier weather for some northern and Great Lakes states. The winter temperature outlook suggests that more than half of the states are likely to experience a warmer-than-average season. Whether we’re in a La Niña year, El Niño year, or neither is determined by sea surface temperatures near the equator over the Pacific Ocean.

How Isaac Smith became MSU’s top defender
SUMMARY: Isaac Smith, a safety for Mississippi State, emerged as a football standout at Itawamba Agricultural High School, attracting Division I offers. Coming from an athletic family, with his father playing at Ole Miss, Isaac’s first offer also came from there. However, he felt a strong connection with Mississippi State and its late coach Mike Leach, who he admired for his kindness, including attending a game when Isaac wasn’t playing. Following Leach’s unexpected passing, Isaac sought guidance through prayer and ultimately chose Mississippi State, feeling called to be there. Today, he remains committed, regardless of coaching changes.
