Editorial: Medicaid and voters
SUMMARY: Despite calls for lawmakers to expand Medicaid in Mississippi, it appears that the issue is dead for this legislative session. Tens of thousands of working poor individuals will continue to struggle to obtain proper health care coverage. Progress was made on the legislation, but hopes faded when a work requirement was proposed for eligible individuals. Another proposal to put the issue on the November ballot was also not well received. This comes after the Mississippi Supreme Court struck down a ballot initiative for Medicaid expansion. The inability to reach a final agreement means that Mississippians will have to wait for future decisions on Medicaid expansion.

SUMMARY: As Thanksgiving approaches, Stew Pot Community Services, a nonprofit organization, is preparing to distribute 1,000 food baskets to families in need, surpassing their usual distribution of 300-350 baskets. Executive Director Jill Buckley attributes the increase to a rise in need and grocery costs. Volunteers, like Anthony McFarland, play a crucial role in helping those less fortunate, emphasizing the importance of community support and encouraging younger generations to engage in service. Stew Pot also serves lunch daily, averaging 200 to 225 plates, ensuring that local families can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together.
