Editorial: Grocery Tax
SUMMARY: Mississippi shares the nation's highest grocery prices with California, despite differing reputations. Unlike California, Mississippi imposes the nation's highest grocery tax at 7%, contributing to these elevated prices. While only 13 states tax groceries, most have rates of 4% or lower. State leaders, including House Speaker Jason White and Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, advocate reducing this tax to aid residents. Halving the tax could save Mississippians around $20.35 weekly, or over $1,000 annually. Their tax reform committee aims for implementation by 2025, though even with reductions, Mississippi's tax would still rank 6th highest, indicating deeper changes are needed.

SUMMARY: Despite the heat, local buckaroos are competing in the Pon Talk County 4-H Livestock Show. To keep everyone cool, extra fans, water faucets, and ice have been added. Livestock Show Chairman T. Stal mentions that the high temperatures have reduced participant numbers, alongside two other concurrent shows. Nonetheless, 4-H members remain undeterred as they work hard all year for this event. Stal emphasizes the program's importance, highlighting its role in helping kids develop as well-rounded individuals who learn respect, responsibility, and business skills.
