SUMMARY: Last week, 60 Minutes aired a segment on former JSU coach Deion Sanders, but the program unfairly presented Jackson, the capital city. In comparing Jackson to Coach Prime’s new home of Boulder, Colorado, the show highlighted pristine landscapes and neighborhoods for Boulder, but only showed dilapidated homes and eyesores for Jackson. The people of Jackson, including JSU coaches T.C. Taylor and Tomekia Reed, have expressed their outrage and rightfully so. Comparing the best of one city against the worst of another is dishonest and shows a clear agenda. Attacks like these, whether from national magazines or state leaders, should not be accepted. It is not good for our momentum, families, local economy, businesses, schools, and tourism. Jackson has much to be proud of, including Fondren Corner, the Reservoir, Lefleur’s, museums, rich history, unique restaurants, and artists. However, the one thing that makes Jackson truly great, its people, was completely ignored by 60 Minutes. It is up to each of us to help build and represent the true version of Jackson to the rest of the world.
