Early morning fire at Old Lamar Elementary Building

SUMMARY: An investigation is underway after an early morning fire broke out on West 15th Street in Laurel. Firefighters battled the flames for hours before getting everything under control. The Laurel Fire Department stated that the Mississippi State Fire Marshall will investigate to determine the cause of the fire. A total of six engines were involved in attacking the fire, and crews worked diligently to extinguish hotspots. The scene was cleared at 8:30 a.m. as a second shift came in to continue monitoring the area. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Laurel Fire Chief Leo Brown said units responded to the structure fire around 2:54 a.m.
