Durham School Board holds 2-hour meeting to discuss plans to address bus driver shortage
SUMMARY: The Durham Board of Education is tackling a pressing busing crisis amid a significant driver shortage, which has led to thousands of students being rerouted. During a recent two-hour meeting, various solutions were discussed, including the implementation of express stops where students can be picked up at centralized locations. Currently, students are on a rotational schedule, receiving transportation four days a week. Families within 1.5 miles of 21 elementary schools must arrange their own transport. The district aims to address both immediate transportation issues and develop a long-term strategy to attract more bus drivers. Updates on plans are expected soon.
WRAL reporter Julian Grace was at the two-hour meeting, where leaders looked for permanent solutions to the ongoing bus driver shortage in the district.

Volleys of litigation land a stay in state, appeal on federal level | North Carolina
SUMMARY: The North Carolina Supreme Court election between incumbent Democrat Allison Riggs and Republican Jefferson Griffin has led to extensive litigation. Griffin is challenging over 60,000 ballots, despite all protests being dismissed, leaving Riggs ahead by 734 votes. The State Board of Elections is appealing to the federal court to block a state remand regarding the election certificate. A temporary stay has been issued, preventing certification until January 2024. Griffin argues the Board’s actions hinder judicial resolution of state-law issues, while the board’s decisions align with political party interests, reflecting broader legislative changes affecting election oversight.
