SUMMARY: Tomorrow is the last day for Beatty Street before owner Mary Harden retires. As fall approaches, allergies may increase, especially with the start of ragweed season. Ragweeds produce high levels of pollen, particularly in Mississippi due to hot and dry summers. Dr. James Holton from the Asthma and Allergy Clinic in Jackson explains how ragweed is a major cause of symptoms during this time of year. Dust mite allergies also tend to worsen in the fall. It can be difficult to distinguish between allergies and a common cold, so consulting a doctor is recommended. Treatment options include prescription nasal sprays and allergy testing for severe cases.

SUMMARY: Maran County has introduced new thermal imaging cameras to enhance firefighting efforts. These devices, resembling smartphones, utilize infrared technology to detect temperature variations, helping firefighters locate people and objects in low visibility situations. Each fire engine will be equipped with one of these cameras, which aids in identifying hot spots, preventing disorientation, and improving overall safety during operations. Training was recently conducted for 21 firefighters, who successfully used the cameras to extinguish a fire from a dryer lint build-up. The cameras cost around $500 to $600 each, funded by community donations, as the volunteer departments require affordable equipment.
