Drought has affected the colors of fall in Pine Belt past few years
SUMMARY: The changing colors of fall foliage vary each year, influenced by multiple factors. Local arborist Lauren Erikson explains that the process begins with chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves. As trees store energy in their trunks, they signal leaves to drop, leading to the exposure of other pigments that create yellow, orange, and red hues. Drought conditions, like those in the Pine Belt, can diminish leaf color by limiting sugar supply to trees, as they prioritize survival over vibrant foliage. Additionally, temperature changes and tree species also impact the intensity of autumn colors, as observed by meteorologist Nick Lor.

Law enforcement answers questions about handicapped parking
SUMMARY: The McGee Police Department has raised concerns about illegal parking in disabled spots, an issue that frequently occurs in parking lots. Police Chief Dennis Bores highlighted that many vehicles occupying these spaces don’t require them, noting that around 40% of such spots may be misused. He addressed misconceptions about law enforcement’s authority on private property when it comes to enforcing ADA guidelines. Chief Tommy Cox of Laurel PD emphasized that improper parking often happens due to individuals in a rush, urging people to be more considerate. Bores stated that this problem is often overlooked due to police understaffing.
