Drought calls for poor pecan crop for Mississippi in 2023
SUMMARY: A poor pecan crop is expected for Mississippi in 2023 due to a late freeze, high summertime temperatures, and a devastating drought. Eric Stafne, a fruit and nut specialist from Mississippi State University, explained that these weather conditions have made it difficult for pecan trees to produce a good crop this year. The drought may also have carryover effects into the following year. Approximately 10% of the state’s pecan orchards have irrigation systems, which have helped them cope with the drought. Mississippi has 800 pecan orchards covering 17,000 acres of land.
