Drought affects travel along Mississippi River
SUMMARY: Cargo ships and river boat tours are being affected by a drought and low water levels on the Mississippi River in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Water levels are 10 to 15 feet lower than normal, causing barges to become stuck. The Mississippi Valley Division Corps of Engineers is using dredges to help ships reach their destinations. They have eight dredges working on the low water emergency and are focusing on the worst areas. The goal is to maintain a channel for boats to move up and down the river. Rain is needed in the upper Mississippi River Valley and Ohio River area to improve water levels.
