Driver’s education set to become mandatory in Mississippi as bill passes
SUMMARY: Mississippi has passed Senate Bill 2695, making driver’s education a mandatory course in public high schools. Authored by Republican Dennis DeBar, the bill received unanimous support from both chambers and awaits Governor Tate Reeves’ approval. Prompted by high teen-driving fatalities in the state, officials emphasize the importance of teaching students additional road safety. Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, the courses will cover classroom learning and hands-on driving experience. Although a state-issued learner’s permit isn’t required for participation, it is recommended, allowing students as young as 14 to engage. The legislation also considers the budget impact on smaller school districts.
