Donald J. Trump takes Oath of Office to become 47th President of the United States
SUMMARY: Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, marking his return for a non-consecutive term. He took office amid impeachment trials, criminal charges, and assassination attempts, while Republicans gained unified control of Washington. Trump plans immediate action with executive orders on border control, fossil fuel expansion, and ending diversity programs. His inaugural address outlined a “new era” of national success and restoration. Due to cold weather, the ceremony was held indoors, and the inaugural parade was replaced with an arena event. Trump also attended a prayer service and met outgoing President Biden at the White House.

Mississippi Senate advances its tax overhaul
SUMMARY: The Senate Finance Committee has advanced legislation to reduce Mississippi’s income tax and grocery sales tax while increasing the gasoline tax. Republican senators argue these changes will stimulate the economy, proposing to decrease the flat 4% income tax to 2.99% over four years. Democrats, however, claim this disproportionately benefits corporations and harms low-income individuals. The Senate’s plan represents a $326 million net tax cut, less than the House’s $1.1 billion proposal, which seeks complete income tax elimination. The Senate also aims to lower the grocery tax from 7% to 5% by July 2026 and raise the gasoline tax to address highway maintenance funding.
