DOJ investigates abuse by Rankin County Sheriff’s Office
SUMMARY: The Department of Justice is asking for public information about alleged abuse by the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office after six former officers pleaded guilty to torturing two Black men. The officers burst into a home, assaulted the men, used racial slurs, poured milk, alcohol, and chocolate syrup on their faces, and shot one of the men in the mouth. They then tried to cover it up by planting drugs and a gun. The conspiracy unraveled, and the former officers are expected to be sentenced in January 2024. If anyone has been a victim of abuse, they are encouraged to contact the FBI hotline.
