County breaks ground on new mental health facility
SUMMARY: Construction has begun on a new 60-bed Behavioral Care Center next to the Oakland County Jail, a project long discussed since 2007. The center, funded by COVID relief, aims to address mental health issues amid divided opinions; some argue the funds should support community mental health initiatives instead. Officials highlight the success of similar facilities, like one in Nashville, which saw a significant reduction in recidivism rates. Kathy Costello advocates for the center, sharing a personal story about her son, who could have benefited from such a facility. The center is expected to be completed by September 2024.

Despite Growing Homelessness, Oklahoma Lawmakers Look to Punitive Measures
SUMMARY: On January 23, volunteers in Norman, Oklahoma, conducted a Point in Time count to survey and assist the unsheltered homeless population, which rose by 25% from 2023 to 2024 due to rising rents and housing shortages. Concurrently, Oklahoma lawmakers proposed legislation to expand a camping ban, subjecting the homeless to fines and jail time. Notably, Senate Bill 484, targeting city funding for homeless services, could significantly affect local shelters. City Care’s new contract with A Friend’s House raises concerns over potential funding cuts, emphasizing the need for supportive housing as a cost-effective solution to homelessness in the community.
