Document shows some Jackson firefighters make $30k in overtime pay
SUMMARY: The Jackson City Council is working to find the funds for firefighter pay raises, amid budget talks. A document obtained by 3 On Your Side shows that some employees within the Jackson Fire Department are making $20,000-$30,000 more than their base salary due to overtime. Longtime firefighter and union president RaSean Thomas explains that the overtime is being worked because of a staffing shortage caused by poor leadership and low salaries. Thomas believes that if the department fills its vacancies, overtime pay will decrease, reinforcing the need for higher base salaries. The mayor‘s administration is offering a 2 mill increase, which the council is against.
