ncnewsline.com – Lynn Bonner – 2025-01-10 05:00:00

SUMMARY: In a Wake Superior Court hearing, Judge Jefferson Griffin seeks to discard over 60,000 ballots to unseat Democratic Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs, who leads by 734 votes. While Griffin’s efforts focus on his race, a separate Republican lawsuit aims to invalidate votes in all statewide contests. Republicans claim many voters lacked driver’s license or Social Security numbers, arguing these individuals are unregistered. However, state law does not mandate such information. The Democratic National Committee plans to oppose the GOP suit, arguing it disenfranchises long-registered voters, undermining election integrity amid already certified results.

carolinapublicpress.org – Sarah Michels – 2025-01-09 23:10:00

SUMMARY: Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper faced six legislative attempts to restructure North Carolina’s election boards, attempting to diminish his authority. Newly elected Gov. Josh Stein is now involved in a lawsuit over a recently enacted law that transfers appointment power from the governor to State Auditor Dave Boliek. This shift could lead to a predominantly Republican composition of the State Board of Elections and county boards, following a history of unsuccessful GOP efforts to control these boards since 2016. With a Republican majority in the state Supreme Court, future rulings on these power dynamics may favor the legislature’s interests.

SUMMARY: The Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, proposed by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, aims to allow individuals with state-issued concealed carry permits to carry handguns across state lines. Supported by 124 Republican cosponsors and endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump, the bill seeks to simplify the complex patchwork of state laws regarding concealed carry. Advocates, including gun rights organizations, argue that the legislation protects Second Amendment rights and prevents legal issues for permit holders traveling between states. Recent litigation in Minnesota highlights the challenges faced by licensed carriers in states that do not recognize their permits.
