SUMMARY: Dexter Wade’s family believes that the Jackson Police Department intentionally withheld information about his death. Wade was struck and killed by an off-duty officer in a police car in March, and his family was not informed until five months later. Wade’s mother filed a missing persons report and repeatedly asked the police to check the morgue, but they still did not notify her. Wade’s family also believes there is a connection between the delayed notification and another case involving the assault and death of Wade’s brother by three police officers in 2019. Prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump is representing Wade’s family and plans to petition a local court to have Wade’s body exhumed for an independent autopsy. The city officials claim it was an unfortunate accident and that there was no malicious intent by the police.
