SUMMARY: DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their border policies after an undocumented immigrant, Baudilio Benedicto Perez Lopez, received a 20-year sentence for a fatal DUI crash. The incident occurred in June 2023, resulting in the death of another driver and additional charges against Perez Lopez for presenting a false ID. Barton linked the tragedy to what he termed “open border” policies, arguing they incentivized illegal immigration, and expressed frustration that taxpayers will bear the cost of Perez Lopez’s imprisonment instead of him being deported to Guatemala.

However, Miller argues that MUW offers a more cost-effective and mission-aligned environment. A survey revealed that 96% of MSMS students prefer staying in Columbus. MUW is seeking state funding to update facilities, while MSU has proposed an $86 million project to relocate the school. Lawmakers have not yet made a decision.

SUMMARY: Lamar Phillips, convicted of the 1992 double murder of Bradley Dew, has been released from prison after serving over 30 years. Phillips and Cedric Morris killed Dew while he was driving home from his job. Phillips also killed another person shortly after. Despite current laws prohibiting parole for certain murder convictions, Phillips’ crime occurred before 1995, making him eligible. His release has sparked outrage, with former prosecutors questioning the decision. This follows another controversial parole decision in 2023, which freed James Williams, a man who dismembered his parents. Mississippi lawmakers have yet to act on parole reform.
