SUMMARY: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a new agreement allowing Florida Highway Patrol troopers to act as federal immigration enforcement officers, a shift from previous limitations under the Biden administration. He criticized the recently passed TRUMP Act, which he believes undermines immigration enforcement and complicates the coordination between state and federal agencies. The TRUMP Act, sponsored by state lawmakers, designates Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson as chief immigration officer, requiring local law enforcement to channel requests for federal immigration assistance through his office. DeSantis condemned the legislation, asserting it fails to address public demands for stronger immigration policies.

Trump administration nixes plan to cover anti-obesity drugs through Medicare

Published

on

www.news4jax.com – Tom Murphy, Associated Press – 2025-04-04 17:27:00

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has decided not to cover high-demand obesity treatments, including medications like Wegovy and Zepbound, under Medicare’s Part D. This decision, announced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, affects primarily older adults, as Medicare primarily serves those aged 65 and above. Joe Biden had proposed rules to extend coverage for such drugs after the 2024 election, but with Trump’s return to office and the confirmation of Dr. Mehmet Oz to lead CMS, these proposals are unlikely to move forward. Medicare still covers Wegovy for patients with heart disease to mitigate future health risks.

www.clickorlando.com – Matt O’Brien, Associated Press – 2025-04-04 11:31:00

SUMMARY: On Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, Mustafa Suleyman, head of the company’s AI division, envisions a future with personalized AI companions that adapt to users over time, embodying unique names, styles, and memories. This initiative focuses on creating meaningful relationships rather than solely enhancing tools, with the AI, called Copilot, already integrated into various Microsoft applications. Suleyman, a former co-founder of DeepMind, is cautious about the race for advanced AI, prioritizing practical personal assistants over abstract goals like artificial general intelligence. He believes these AI companions will revolutionize both professional and personal lives by handling tedious tasks and fostering creativity.
