SUMMARY: councilwoman Nettie Davis and Reverend Charles Penson have avoided trial after charges were dismissed against them. The charges stemmed from organizing a raffle to encourage people to vote in a city election, which violated election laws. Defense attorney Jim Wade stated that Davis had called off the raffle once she learned it was illegal. Davis will keep her position as city councilwoman and will continue to advocate for African American voter turnout, but will be fined $700 for misdemeanor charges. Wade believes these charges, as well as potential charges against an unnamed Republican candidate, are excessive.
