Debby slowly moves up through GA & the threat is now catastrophic flooding | Quickcast
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Debbie has impacted Florida’s Gulf Coast, causing severe flooding and wind damage, particularly in Cedar Key, where streets are submerged. Four fatalities have been reported, including a tragic incident involving a 13-year-old boy. As Debbie weakens and moves towards Georgia and the Carolinas, heavy rainfall of up to 30 inches is anticipated in some areas, prompting curfews in Savannah. The storm caused extensive flight delays at Miami International Airport, stranding many travelers. In related news, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to announce her running mate soon as new polls show her in a competitive position against Donald Trump.

In today’s Quickcast:
Debby has weakened to a Tropical Storm after making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend coast as a hurricane Monday. At least four storm-related deaths have been reported. The threat now is catastrophic flooding, as Debby slowly moves inland and up through Georgia.
Hurricane Debby brought more than powerful winds and storm surge to Florida — packages of cocaine worth more than $1 million also made landfall, officials said, marking the latest in a string of recent discoveries of drugs along Florida shores.
Debby, which slammed into the state as a Category 1 hurricane but has since been downgraded to a tropical storm, washed the drugs ashore in the Florida Keys, U.S. Border Patrol acting chief patrol Agent Samuel Briggs II wrote on social media.
“Hurricane Debby blew 25 packages of cocaine (70 lbs.) onto a beach in the Florida Keys,” Briggs wrote, posting two images of the packages.
A man running for a seat on the Sunny Isles Beach commission was arrested Sunday after he reportedly assaulted two teens in a Cuban restaurant.
During a political event he hosted at the El Tropical on Collins Avenue, George Bardmesser was seated at a table with his constituents when he got into an argument with several “opposition leaders” seated at a table next to him, according to the arrest report.
As the argument grew more heated, Bardmesser, 59, put a teen into a choke hold, according to police who reviewed the restaurant’s surveillance video.
Several others in the restaurant then intervened, separating Bardmesser from the teen.
Bardmesser then got into a shoving match and hit another teen in the face, according to the surveillance video.
Several people in the restaurant then flagged down a police officer on patrol. In a cellphone video, those in the restaurant can be heard accusing Bardmesser of hitting a child.

Could Pine Hills become its own city? That’s what local leaders are asking
SUMMARY: In Pine Hills, Florida, a movement advocates for the area to become its own municipality, following examples from Belle Isle and Winter Park. Supporters, including resident Moliere Dimache, argue that local governance and a dedicated police force would improve public safety and address crime concerns. The proposal for incorporation, which aligns with discussions dating back nearly 60 years, would enable residents to manage their community independently. However, this initiative could lead to increased property taxes for city services. Dimache plans to file incorporation paperwork, aiming to bring the proposal before voters after rallying community support.

Florida Lawmaker seeks to bring more transparency and accountability to HOAs
SUMMARY: Florida lawmaker Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) is advocating for increased transparency and oversight in homeowners’ associations (HOAs) through his proposed bill, HB 983. His initiative aims to improve enforcement of existing laws and reduce fraud, citing past crimes, including a significant scam in his district. Key provisions of the bill include simplifying the recall process for HOA board members, allowing homeowners to recover legal fees, mandating document disclosure before property closings, and enabling local law enforcement to audit and investigate HOAs. Porras emphasizes that HOAs should be held to stricter accountability, akin to elected officials, amid concerns over corruption in Florida’s large HOAs.
