Death row inmate to testify in front of House committee after life-saving subpoena
SUMMARY: Texas man Robert Roberson, whose execution was halted, will testify before the Texas legislature via Zoom, pleading for his life. Convicted in 2002 for the murder of his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis, many now believe she may have died from natural causes, not shaken baby syndrome as originally thought. His execution was postponed after a House committee subpoenaed him, leading bipartisan lawmakers to question the criminal justice system’s handling of his case. Despite prior clemency requests being denied, the committee’s unanimous support for Roberson highlights concerns over potential wrongful convictions and the irrevocability of capital punishment.
Robert Roberson was nearly executed on Thursday, but a last minute stay from the Texas Supreme Court halted the execution. On Monday, Roberson will address the committee that issued the subpoena that kept the state from taking his life.
