Daycares and parents react to temporary changes to Mississippi Child Care Payment Program
SUMMARY: Cuts in federal funding to Mississippi’s Child Care Payment Program are causing financial strain for many parents who rely on it to afford daycare. With the program’s freeze on applications, single mother Amber Keenum struggles to pay for daycare for her 2-year-old. Wendy’s Childcare Academy in Pascagoula, where 75% of families depend on the program, faces potential closures or layoffs. Both daycare owners and parents are calling on the state for assistance to ensure children’s safety and continued care. The program remains available for families with low incomes or special needs children.

Cuts in federal funding have some parents wondering how they will afford daycare going forward.

Historic Barq’s bottling building transforming into bed and breakfast
SUMMARY: The historic Barq’s Bottling Building in Biloxi is being transformed into a bed and breakfast after years of restoration. Once listed among the state’s most endangered historical sites, the building was in disrepair, with contractors doubting its survival. Now, thanks to owner TZ Nikovich and the city’s approval, the site will preserve its history as a landmark of Biloxi’s seafood legacy and Barq’s root beer origins. Owned by Thomas Qua, great-grandson of Barq’s creator Edward Barq, the building will house museum-quality displays and celebrate the legacy when it opens in August. Nikovich will reside there full-time.

The old Barq’s bottling building in Biloxi will soon have new life.

Waveland officials considering change to governing process
SUMMARY: Waveland officials are considering changing the city’s outdated special charter government, a process requiring approval from the attorney general, legislature, and governor. Alderman Rhonda Amy Gamble argued that this update would make government operations more efficient. However, residents voiced concerns at a recent meeting, questioning the timing of the change when other issues, such as the city’s deteriorating pier, remain unresolved. Despite pushback, the council feels obligated to explore options for improvement. To proceed, 20% of voters would need to sign a petition for the idea to be put to a vote.

Waveland leaders are considering changing the way they handle government in the city.
