Dauphin Island Causeway restoration project: What to know about phase 2
SUMMARY: Crews have begun phase 2 of the Dauphin Island Causeway restoration project, aimed at improving the marine habitat and enhancing road safety. The project addresses erosion along State Highway 193, the island’s only access route, which is critical for evacuation during emergencies. It involves 800,000 cubic yards of dredged material to restore marshland between Bayfront Park and Cedar Point. The restoration will protect the causeway and create a habitat for marine life. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2025, with significant support from local entities and agencies.

Phase two of the Causeway Shoreline Restoration Project kicked off Thursday.

The cuts, amounting to an $80 million annual loss for the university, have sparked concerns among students and researchers. Protesters argue that the cuts threaten jobs and hinder progress in vital research, particularly in areas like cancer treatment. Wendy DeMarco, a 30-year research veteran, highlighted the difficulties in adapting to new funding regulations. Despite outreach to Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, no response was received regarding the protest. The movement continues to gain support across Central Alabama.
