While large factory farms can endure these losses, family farms cannot. Nationally, 64% of family dairies vanished between 1997 and 2017. Factors like hurricanes, poor infrastructure, and unfavorable federal policies have worsened conditions for small operators. Additionally, while factory farms yield more milk, they contribute to increased methane emissions, exacerbating environmental concerns.
