Data of nearly all AT&T customers downloaded to a third-party platform in security breach

SUMMARY: AT&T disclosed a security breach affecting nearly 109 million customer accounts via a third-party platform. The incident, occurring mostly from May to October 2022, involved AT&T cellular, MVNO, and landline customers’ interactions but did not expose sensitive personal data. The breach, attributed to inadequate data storage security, allowed the tracing of call patterns and connections. AT&T emphasized the absence of content, timestamps, Social Security numbers, or names in the compromised data but acknowledged the potential to match phone numbers to individuals using public records. The breach is part of a growing trend of cyberattacks on businesses and institutions, highlighting the need for stricter security measures.
