Current bill unlikely to pass
SUMMARY: Efforts to change Mississippi University for Women’s name have stalled, with House Bill 1155 unlikely to pass. President Nora Miller announced a strategic pause, and the bill to change the name to Wynbridge State University of Mississippi is not expected to make it through the committee. The proposed name change sought to maintain the school’s “The W” branding, after an initial proposal to rename it Mississippi Brightwell University caused an alumni outcry. University leaders argued that a new name was necessary for competitiveness, but for now, it appears that the name change will not happen.
