SUMMARY: Plano police praised a courageous 12-year-old girl who survived being struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking to school. The incident occurred on December 10 when the driver, 49-year-old Zulma Beltran, backed up and fled after hitting the girl, who reported the event to a school resource officer upon arrival. Investigators used surveillance footage from the school and neighborhood to identify Beltran, who had just dropped off another child at the school. She was arrested and charged with a felony count of failure to stop and render aid, potentially facing up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Plano police said the woman accused of hitting a girl walking to school had just dropped a child off at the same school before the incident occurred.
