The bill, HB 598, aimed to allow terminally ill adults to request medication for a humane death after being evaluated by physicians. It required both an oral and written request, psychological evaluation, and agreement from doctors on the patient’s condition. Freeman’s motivations stem from a personal experience with a terminally ill friend. Despite support from some, the bill faced strong opposition, ultimately failing 2-8 along party lines, with concerns over the implications for medical ethics and physician responsibilities.
