Coast Life: Feed the Needy continues Thanksgiving tradition of giving back
SUMMARY: During Thanksgiving week, Harrison County law enforcement teams up with volunteers to provide meals for those in need. This marks the 35th year of the “Feed the Needy” initiative, led by retired Sheriff’s Department employee Jimmy Johnson. Starting with just a few hundred meals, it now serves 1,500 to 2,000 meals annually. The event is a collaboration of all law enforcement agencies across the coast, with meals packaged at the Lyman Community Center. Volunteers of all ages participate, building relationships and offering companionship alongside food. Over the years, around 95,000 meals have been served. Christmas meal requests and volunteer opportunities are also available.
On Thursday, law enforcement in Harrison County will team up once again with hundreds of volunteers to make sure those in need have a happy Thanksgiving.

Eye-catching, scrap metal cockroach now sunk as fishing reef in Gulf of Mexico
SUMMARY: A giant metal cockroach, previously seen off Highway 90 in Buuy, has been sunk to the Gulf of Mexico to serve as a fishing reef. After months of planning, the cockroach now offers new structure for marine life, contributing to the fishing industry in Mississippi, which lacks oil rigs for habitat. The sinking took about 15 minutes, with the metal structure descending uniquely due to a welded top. Situated 20 miles offshore at 100 feet deep, it will attract fish and divers alike. SRHS, New Vision Withdraw Management partner to help those struggling with addiction
SUMMARY: Singing River Health System is launching a new management program through New Vision to assist individuals struggling with addiction in safely detoxing from substance use, including opioids, alcohol, and benzodiazepines. Starting tomorrow, patients can begin treatment at Singing River in Pascagoula, complementing existing services in Gulfport. The program provides medically supervised withdrawal in hospital settings, typically lasting 3 to 5 days, with a structured aftercare plan to support ongoing recovery. Insurance coverage is accepted, including Mississippi and Alabama Medicaid. This initiative aims to address high overdose rates, fostering improved community health and support for recovering patients.
Singing River is working to help those struggling with addiction to safely begin their journey to detox from drugs and alcohol.
