Cracking down on Raleigh County speeding
SUMMARY: Speeding remains a major cause of crashes and fatalities in West Virginia, and the Beckley Police Department is working to address the problem. Although they don’t yet use intelligent speed assistance systems, they enforce protocols and penalties, including fines and license points. Virginia plans to introduce mandatory speed limiters in 2026, which may influence future policies. Sergeant Jamie Willheight emphasizes that the goal is prevention—not punishment—and ensuring drivers can maintain valid licenses. Reasons for speeding include time pressure, aggressive driving, and traffic flow. Authorities stress that speeding drastically increases crash risks and endangers lives on Raleigh County roads.

Speeding is one of the leading causes of the Mountain State’s crashes and fatalities. Virginia also has that problem. In July 2026, it will become the first state to stop reckless drivers with a speed limiter device.
