COVID-19 testing waivers help Mississippi graduation rate

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education reports a record-high graduation rate of 89.4% and a decrease in the dropout rate to 8.5% for all students and 17.7% for students with disabilities during the 2022-23 school year. These positive outcomes are credited to adjustments in testing requirements due to COVID-19. However, it is expected that this impact will diminish in the following school year. Pass requirements for end-of-year assessments in multiple subjects were waived due to COVID-19. The statewide graduation rate has improved significantly since 2013 when it was as low as 74.5%.
