SUMMARY: A federal appeals court ruled that Mississippi legislators must decide on changes to the state’s practice of disenfranchising felons, a practice rooted in the Jim Crow era. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals’ majority cited a 1974 Supreme Court ruling upholding such disenfranchisement laws. Dissenters argued the practice is cruel and unusual punishment. Tens of thousands in Mississippi are disenfranchised, predominantly Black individuals. Efforts to restore voting rights face legislative hurdles, though a recent proposal for automatic restoration was blocked. The case underscores ongoing tensions over voting rights and racial discrimination in the state’s legal framework.

A necklace with Lee’s name was found at the site. Authorities arrested Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington, Jr. shortly after Lee’s disappearance, accusing him of murder linked to their alleged romantic relationship. A mistrial occurred due to a jury’s indecision, with one juror reluctant to convict without a body. With Lee’s remains now identified, a retrial is expected, potentially complicating the defense’s claims of Herrington’s innocence. Lee’s parents had previously declared him legally dead.
