Court rules in favor of former Hinds County supervisor
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled in favor of former Hinds County Supervisor David Archie, overturning a previous Circuit Court decision that dismissed his election challenge. The Circuit Court had ruled his challenge was filed too late, but Archie argued he was unable to file on time due to the clerk’s office being closed from a cyber attack. The justices found insufficient evidence regarding the closure and returned the case to the lower court. The Supreme Court did not address the merits of Archie’s election challenge, leaving it for the Circuit Court to decide if it will proceed.

Hinds County DA says his budget is being cut
SUMMARY: Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens expressed concerns about significant budget cuts to his office, which he claims could jeopardize public safety. The county board has approved a 33% reduction in his office’s administrative and investigative staff, leading to the layoff of four employees. Owens accused Board President Robert Graham of prioritizing the construction of a new $100 million jail over funding law enforcement. He stated that several board members were unaware of the scope of the cuts and highlighted that Hinds County has the highest crime rate in Mississippi, emphasizing the potential impact on prosecution resources.
