SUMMARY: Crews are continuing to fight the Covington Drive fire, which has burned 259 acres and is 80% contained. A recent statewide burn ban, effective since yesterday, aims to prevent further fires. Residents in the Walker Woods community emphasize the importance of following the ban to ensure safety. Despite recent rain, experts warn the risk remains high due to dry conditions. Daryl Jones, South Carolina’s forest protection chief, highlights that 60% of wildfires are human-caused and preventable. Residents like Jerry Gallagher stress the need for awareness, as he recalls the danger of being evacuated in the middle of the night.

Even though it’s been almost three weeks since the Covington Drive fire started, it’s not out just yet.

With the most recent statewide burn ban that went into affect on Friday, people in Walkers Woods, a Carolina Forest community, said it’s important to follow the rules now more than ever.

“It’s really important to have the burn ban,” a Walkers Woods resident said. “It makes us as the community rethink what we need to do for our homes and be safe and maybe what we put around our house.”

www.youtube.com – WYFF News 4 – 2025-03-23 05:19:04

SUMMARY: The region is experiencing a very dry stretch, with minimal rainfall and moderate drought conditions. The combination of dry weather, breezy conditions, and low humidity continues to elevate fire danger. Despite this, today will be a mild and sunny day with temperatures in the 60s to 70s. A cold front is expected to bring a small amount of rain tonight into tomorrow morning, though it will likely have little impact. The rest of the day and the week ahead will feature sunny weather, with more dry conditions predicted, making it a beautiful but fire-prone stretch of weather.
