Councilman Stokes again calls for contract for JPD chief
SUMMARY: Jackson's police chief, Joseph Wade, is at the center of ongoing efforts to combat crime, as councilman Kenneth Stokes prioritizes public safety. Shooting rates in Jackson have raised concerns, prompting Stokes to push for a contract for Wade, which the city council approved but the mayor vetoed. The council overrode the veto. Stokes also calls for increasing the police force by 200 officers. Additionally, an upcoming ordinance will mandate security personnel at businesses with a history of violence during operating hours. This ordinance will be voted on in the next city council meeting, reports Delicia Banks from 12 News.

SUMMARY: The Oxford School District will partake in three USDA meal programs in the upcoming school year: the School Breakfast Program, the National School Lunch Program, and the After School Care Program. The breakfast program offers free meals to all students, while the lunch program provides low-cost or free lunches daily. The after school program supplies snacks to students in after-school care. These programs ensure that students have access to nutritious meals throughout the day.
The breakfast program will provide reimbursement to operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools.

SUMMARY: Panhandling, or soliciting donations in public, has become an issue in Tupelo. While protected by the First Amendment, Tupelo is considering an ordinance to curb aggressive panhandling. The proposed ordinance, discussed in a City Council work session, aims to make aggressive solicitation illegal. Behaviors such as using intimidation, blocking pathways, asking near ATMs and banks, or continuing to beg after refusal could incur misdemeanor charges and fines. The ordinance also targets unsafe panhandling near high-traffic areas to address public safety concerns. The Council will vote on this ordinance, with updates to follow.
