Coolidge Ball, first Black student-athlete at Ole Miss, passes away

SUMMARY: Coolidge Ball, the first Black student-athlete at the University of Mississippi, passed away at the age of 71. Ball signed a scholarship in 1970 to play basketball for Ole Miss, breaking barriers for future Black student-athletes. He had a successful career with the Rebels, scoring over 1,000 points and leading the team to three consecutive winning seasons. After his playing days, Ball coached at Northwest Mississippi Community College and later opened his own sign company. He was inducted into multiple halls of fame and was remembered for his courage, strength, and kindness. Ball was honored with a bronze statue on campus in 2021. Both the Chancellor and athletics director expressed their sadness and praised Ball’s impact. Visitation and the funeral will be held this week.

Canton man sentenced to 40 years after killing wife
