NMMC in Tupelo cares for patients virtually
SUMMARY: North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo is addressing the nationwide shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) through a virtual nursing program. Managed by Heather Wilf, the program supplements current nursing staff by using technology similar to iPhones or iPads to handle admissions and discharges. This virtual system allows nurses to concentrate more on patients without distractions. While virtual nurses can't perform tasks like flushing IVs or taking blood pressure, the initiative has executed over 6,000 discharges and 1,000 admissions since last April. The medical center aims to expand this program to its community hospitals.
