SUMMARY: During President Donald Trump’s address to Congress on March 4, 2025, he announced 25% tariffs on nearly all goods from Mexico and Canada, which prompted concerns among Americans about rising prices. An Elon University poll indicated that 81% of respondents expected price increases, with 45% predicting significant hikes. Half believed tariffs would negatively affect small businesses, while two-thirds felt U.S. producers would struggle with higher import costs. In retaliation, Canada proposed $100 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods, and China announced up to 15% tariffs on U.S. agricultural products.
