Head of Mississippi Hospital Association speaks on another round of Medicaid expansion debate
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are revisiting the issue of Medicaid expansion, which they failed to resolve earlier this year. House Speaker Jason White and Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann plan to address the topic when the legislative session resumes in January. A significant obstacle was House Democrats’ skepticism about federal approval for a proposed work requirement. However, the head of the State Hospital Association believes recent election results may facilitate the proposal’s acceptance by federal agencies. Despite support for expanding Medicaid to aid low-income individuals and hospitals, Governor Tate Reeves opposes it, presenting a challenge for lawmakers seeking to override his veto.

Long-empty building in downtown Hattiesburg to become art gallery
SUMMARY: In Hattiesburg, Kelly White is revitalizing the historic Walnut Street drugstore, transforming it into an art gallery for local creatives. The building, constructed around 1950 and previously functioning as a family-owned pharmacy, has been mostly abandoned for 20 years. White purchased the building last week and is collaborating with the historic preservation society to honor its legacy. Featuring works by local artist Andrea Costal, White aims to keep the initiative community-focused. She envisions the gallery as a permanent downtown highlight, expecting it to open by January while hoping to inspire further revitalization in the area.
