Congressman pledges help to JPS schools at risk of closure

SUMMARY: Congressman Bennie Thompson has offered federal assistance to the Jackson Public Schools (JPS) Board of Trustees in repurposing school buildings that are being considered for closure. The congressman believes that if the buildings are in good condition, they can be repurposed with a coordinated strategy. The JPS Board of Trustees is considering closing or consolidating 16 schools due to declining enrollment, facility issues, and staffing shortages. Superintendent Dr. Errick Greene estimates that closing or consolidating these schools could save millions of dollars. Thompson suggests turning the closed buildings into community centers, health centers, and senior living facilities. The final recommendations will be made by December 5, 2023.
