Southern Miss baseball kicks off new season with annual media day at Pete Taylor Park
SUMMARY: During the 2025 Southern Miss baseball media day at Pete Taylor Park, the central focus was on the team’s ambitious goal: reaching Omaha. Coach Christian Ostrander and players emphasized their commitment to winning the conference, hosting regionals, and ultimately striving for success at the College World Series. Veterans like fifth-year senior Caron Paetow recognized the value of experience, having previously won two conference tournaments and hosted super regionals. This season, the team aims to build upon their tradition of excellence while preparing younger players for the intensity of postseason competition. The regular season begins on February 14th against the Lafayette Leopards.

State Attorney General completes review of four officer-involved shooting incidents
SUMMARY: The Office of the Attorney General reviewed four officer-involved shootings. These include the January 2024 death of George County Deputy Jeremy Malone during a traffic stop, an October 2022 incident in Greenville where Officer Myiesha Stewart died, and an August 2023 shooting in Canton where a suspect was killed after threatening deputies. In all but one case, the use of force was justified. The August 2022 shooting involving Capitol Police officers Jeffrey Walker and Michael Rhinewalt, which injured a woman, led to charges of aggravated assault, with the case under prosecution and ongoing litigation.

Mississippi House passes pharmacy benefit manager transparency bill
SUMMARY: A bill passed in the Mississippi House aims to increase transparency for pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) by requiring them to report data to the Board of Pharmacy. The bill prohibits PBMs from overcharging insurers for drugs and mandates reports on rebates, affiliations, and drug costs. It also allows the Board to issue subpoenas during audits. Despite passing with strong support (88-8), critics, including independent pharmacists, argue it doesn’t sufficiently protect smaller pharmacies or provide enough enforcement power. Some advocates push for a standardized drug pricing model, but House Speaker Jason White remains opposed to it at this time.
